Wine Appreciation 1

Group Leader

Available from the Enquiries Secretary

Date of Meeting

3rd Thursday of the month (October to May, but not December)

Time

10.00 to 12.00

Venue

St. Michael’s Parish Rooms, Stanwix, Carlisle.

What we do: The basic aim of the Group, now entering its 9th year, is to talk about and taste the widest possible range of wines from around the world. Through membership of the Group, members will hopefully be able:

  1. To assess, appreciate and hopefully enjoy the wines being tasted
  2. To understand the qualities and faults of wine
  3. To recognise good value in wine
  4. To gain enough knowledge and confidence in the wines, so that ordering or buying is an enjoyment, not an ordeal
  5. To understand the art and artifice of winemaker, buyer and merchant

Each session is complete in itself, with 6 wines normally being tasted at each session. It should be noted that we only work with ‘tasting’ quantities not ‘drinking for pleasure’ volumes!

There is adequate car parking within reasonable walking distance of the venue and all glasses are supplied for our sessions.

We currently have the optimum number of 24 in our Group (including the tutor). This means that there is usually always a small waiting list, currently 6, as at the end of July 2003. People from the waiting list are invited to our meetings when it is known in advance that regular attendees are going to be absent. We have had a waiting list for the last 5 years and people always progress on to the main Group
