What we do:
‘Over the Hills’ is somewhat tongue in cheek! Our youngest member has just qualified for a bus pass and we go up from her to the late 70’s. We have 30 in the group and a few on the waiting list. We like to go ‘over the hills in that we enjoy good views if only occasionally getting right to the top. Walks are usually 4 and 6+ miles taken at a reasonable pace. Most walks require boots and poles are useful. We do not include dogs. We have a short break for coffee and take packed lunches.
What is different about us?
Our walks are accessible by and geared to public transport, so we are a ‘green’ group. There is no rule about not using cars; however, the aim is to encourage the use of buses and trains doing our bit for the environment.
The walks
Members lead some interesting walks taking the strain off the group leader. We have walked on all the nearby long distance paths although most walks are in North Cumbria and occasionally the Lake District. Walks finish at a tea place. Through our train walks have taken us along the Cumbrian coast and the Carlisle to Settle line
Education
We have shared novels, attended lectures and in the winter months visited new places adding to our geographical knowledge We have improved our leading skills, enjoyed each others company and had fun together.
