What we do: What we do: The aims of the Group are to explore the subject of Art History and so enhance our understanding of the paintings and sculptures seen in the art museums of the world.
The Group is run on shared learning principles with each member contributing to the exploration of the work of artists and their contexts.
As our first project we looked at Vermeer, studying not just the artist but the social and political history of his times. Vermeer was chosen as there was a large exhibition of his work in London at the National Gallery, so some of us at least were able to see the original works. Good though reproductions are these days, there is nothing like seeing the paintings themselves.
In the main we have followed a chronological route through the subject from the Renaissance in Italy to our current(2008) study of the Romantics.
We use various methods such as:-
- Group exploration of paintings using a minimum of 4 copiesof a work to ensure each member can see and comment as required
- Individual research on particular painters/history presented by the member concerned
- Slides
- Video
- Gallery visits and reports
- Occasional guest lecture
With only two hours per month we can only introduce the subject within the group. However, the individual projects, even when small, do ensure we each learn something about the subject
In order to see original paintings the Group has undertaken study visits to Madrid, Venice, Bologna and various exhibitions in England/Scotland. A visit to Lille is anticipated.
During the Autumn our studies will continue through Impressionism towards Modern Art and later we plan to visit the Wallace Collection in London.
The Group will welcome new members who are prepared to take a full part in the shared learning approach which will, of necessity, involve some work in libraries and/or galleries. The Art College library has proved extremely helpful for some, others use the internet and many of us indulge n buying the various cheap books that are found in such shops as Bookends.
