What we do:
The group is primarily for members with limited or no scientific background but who are enthusiastic to gain some understanding of simple science.
Group members` priority, apart from the coffee break, is “hands on” work. This is a mixture of simple experiments of chemistry, biology and physics with everyday applications.
A physics project we carried out was a competition to design and make the strongest bridge spanning 30 cm (1 foot). The only materials which were allowed was one section of the Cumberland News and PVA glue. The winner supported over 40kg at its mid point before collapsing. This is equivalent to a slim lady balancing on a stiletto heel on one leg!
We usually carry out our experiments in small groups, so that members with more confidence can assist those who are a bit unsure.
We avoid a lecturing situation as much as possible, preferring to learn through chat and discussion. More than one third of members at present are ladies, so chat is abundentl!
