What we do: Our aim is mainly to explore the lower Lake District Fells but occasionally other areas are included.
The distance covered by each walk is about 5 miles. Return times can vary depending on the length of the walk, severity of the weather, steepness of climb, nature of the terrain etc. Our average walking time is about 4.5 hours.
We benefit from the physical exercise but our minds are exercised too from the constant discussion which takes place as we walk and we often learn things along the way when we come across significant or historic buildings, locations, sites etc. There is also usually someone in the Group who can point out particularly interesting plant and wildlife specimens.
There are about 30 members in the Group (12 men) but they do not all turn up for every walk.
In the event of bad weather conditions a walk is occasionally cancelled or changed, contact being made by telephone.
We take a picnic lunch and only once in four years have we had this in pouring rain! The laughter on that occasion was louder than usual!
The safety aspect is paramount and proper walking equipment is worn and carried.
We have now adopted a ‘tradition’ of having an annual dinner in early February.
