What we do: The Geology group was launched in 1999 as probably the first science-based group in Carlisle U3A. From a small founding core of six it has grown to one with 18 members most of whom have come to the subject with little or no scientific background. The group leader, Judy Suddaby, takes the group through specific geological topics, following set themes, but always welcoming diversions into realms of particular interest to individual group members. There is plenty of emphasis on local Geology.

At most meetings samples of minerals, rocks and fossils brought in by some of the members are examined and discussed.  Time is given to press and magazine articles of current interest and travel pamphlets of places where members have been.  There are geological maps to puzzle over and learn how to interpret. The topics planned for the near future include ' Igneous rocks, their mineralogy and the structures they form'. As usual the work will be broad-based and have frequent revisions of subject matter dealt with in earlier sessions. Therefore, it is possible to join the group at any point without feeling too much at a disadvantage

Our next session of 12 meetings will commence on 26th September2008.

After Easter there will be 3 one day field trips in place of the indoor meetings. In mid-May 2009 there will be a 4 day residential trip.
