What we do: I designed this course because I found sculpture so rewarding that I wished to pass on the knowledge I have built up from many different tutors and my own experience. I found that even the best courses I attended lacked some ingredient I considered important, so I have tried to draw them altogether in this one.
Above all, I want to transmit some of the enthusiasm I have for sculpture, and make the experience an enjoyable one for the students.
I aim to ensure that each student attains some skill in at least one sculptural medium, but that he/she is aware of all the media available to him/her. Although technique is important, I also believe in developing creative potential, ability to “see” in an artistic way, and a knowledge of the current world sculpture scene, and of historical sculptural movements and styles. And I think it is very important that he/she has some finished work to show for it.
The class is suitable for beginners or those with some experience. The actual order of events and speed with which new topics are introduced will depend on progress in class. Clearly, people will develop at different rates, and in the practical workshop environment, I am prepared to teach people at different levels at the same time.
This does necessitate an upper limit to the class size, which is currently set at 10, and I maintain a waiting list as required. We meet at my home in Low Hesket, usually in my studio in the byre. This is very handy for tools, materials, books and my sculptures, which I hope provide inspiration. We usually have a coffee break, for which there is a small charge,; materials are also provided at cost, and a group member keeps the accounts.
No particular preparation is required, except to think about what you want to create. No protective clothing is required, but make it old, and warm in winter! We usually put on a display of our works at the AGM, and we are considering a group visit to Glenkiln.
