What we do:

There are 12 individual workstations each comprising a 2.6GHz Pentium 4 computer, 17" flat screen colour monitor, scanner and set of headphones. All workstations are networked and linked to a Hewlett Packard inkjet colour printer and a fast Brother HL black & white laser printer. We are also able to use the internet via a fast Broadband link.

We have installed all the usual computer applications software to enable training and tuition in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, desk top publishing and CD burning and copying. We have also recently updated the photography and imaging software by installing Adobe Photo Elements 5 on six machines.

We have recently run training courses on the manipulation of digital images, the production of greeting cards, uses of the internet including for genealogy, emailing and  courses for absolute beginners, with no knowledge of computers whatsoever.

The training and tuition is provided by volunteer members -  a few who are more knowledgeable, experienced and practiced than most of us (even if it is in only one specialised application) -  in the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king!

To enquire about courses, or to reserve a place on a course, members should phone the U3A Computer Line (07803 004678). This is a mobile phone especially for computer and IT enquiries. As such it may be switched off when you call, so please be prepared to leave a message. Callers must leave their name and telephone number together with their query or details of any course they wish to follow. Members should speak slowly and, for the sake of clarity and avoidance of doubt, repeat their name and telephone number. Messages on mobile phones are often not as clear as callers think they will be.

In the New Year it is hoped that we might be able to offer courses on word-processing, spreadsheets and desk top publishing as well as some more absolute beginners' courses.

Members are welcome to bring along their own laptop computers.

We hope to be able to organise a regular weekly time slot for a "Computer Club" where members can bring along their own work and projects, share experiences, problems and solutions and help each other with all the niggling little things that we can't quite work out on our own. All we need are volunteers.

Contact George Weston on 07803 004678 for all matters concerning computer and IT training and with any ideas on the use of the IT Centre.

We can usually take up to 13 people at any time
